Premiering at this year's Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT is a film by the title of SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS. The "part concert film, part documentary, part intimate narrative" marks the end of LCD Soundsystem as a band, with James Murphy and company packing it in with a final performance at famed Madison Square Garden.

The Beauty Bar brand expands eastward to Riverside with a 700 capacity venue, The Beauty Ballroom. January 27 and 28 marks the Grand Opening weekend for the new east-side venue, with performances by Theophilus London and a special performance by This Ambitious Orchestra, covering the hits of David Bowie and Elvis.

The 2012 Austin Psych Fest has revealed its initial lineup moving from the Seaholm Power Plant last year and now taking place for the first time at the Emo’s East and the brand new Beauty Ballroom, the festival be held on the weekend of April 27-29.

Artists include Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, The Black Lips, Pure X, Sleep Over and more. Weekend passes will be on sale on the festival’s website starting January 21 at Noon. More artists will be announced in March along with set times and day tickets.

Our community recently lost an amazing friend, activist, teacher, and music fan. Esme Barrera was murdered early New Year's Day at her home in central Austin.

I had the honor of working with Esme for 4 years at Girls Rock Camp Austin. We rarely encounter people so inspiring -- whose compassion and joy are contagious. Esme was the unique gift of a person who could ease a new girl's fear at Rock Camp with a hug -- who a Waterloo customer remembers for her smile -- who a local band remembers for rocking out in the front row. Esme was the epitome of awesome.

The day after I heard the news she was gone, I went into Resonate Studios with Louie Lino to track a song I'd been holding inside for a long time and that I wanted to dedicate to Esme. Louie offered to add keyboards and the result of this January afternoon is what you hear above.

During recording, I learned that Esme once lived above the studio and was a dear friend of Louie and his family. I've been overwhelmed with how many people her light has touched. Even now Esme is inspiring our community and bringing people together. This song is simply an attempt to honor that inspiration and to give something back. Thank you, Esme, for all that you gave and thank you, Louie, for working with me on this song.

At the beginning of March, two of our favorite bands, The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys will be embarking on a North American tour. Smack dab in the middle of those dates, the bands will be returning to Austin in what should be an extremely packed Frank Erwin Center. Tickets for the April 25th show go onsale this Friday at 10am. No word on how much tickets will set you back yet or more importantly, if the Erwin Center website can handle all the traffic this time. Sorry we couldn't resist.

Over the years Ian and Jeramy have brought some of the best musical talent from all over the world to Austin and there has always been a certain style to their parties that can't be duplicated. This years special guest remains to be seen but I have full faith that they will be bringing someone big along with support from some amazing talent.

AT THE DRIVE-IN is back!!!!! The band's new website and twitter popped up earlier this morning and simply reads, "ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence. THIS STATION IS .... NOW ....OPERATIONAL."

The tributes for Esme Barrera continue to blanket the cold that remains after the loss of one of El Paso’s and Austin’s genuine souls.

Most recently, Ted Leo announced he’d join The Crack Pipes, the Golden Boys and Grape St. for a solo show at Beerland on January 28^th. The benefit show will help defray some costs for the Barrera family.

Update: A second benefit show has been announced at Scoot Inn on 1/12.

As the year winds down, the always nice and incredibly awesome people at Austin City Limits have to decided to bring some holiday cheer by announcing their 2012 tapings. They have indeed made us wish 2012 was here already. Confirmed for Season 38 include RADIOHEAD (!!!!), The Shins, The Civil Wars, and Rodrigo y Gabriela w/ C.U.B.A.

When it was announced Radiohead was coming to Austin, our first thought was we have to get tickets (no matter the cost). It's not everyday your favorite band comes to town. And our second thought was, we hoped they'd be recording a taping on the famed Austin City Limits stage. Check, check.... (via)

The National's show here in Austin this past weekend was just about perfect (we have pictures/videos to prove it). Seriously, I don't think I've ever heard Austin Music Hall sound so good. Seeing them again live further entrenches them as one of favorite bands. The only complaint (and it's a petty one) was secretly hoping the band would perform a new song or two. Well, I finally got my wish, albeit a few days later.

The band recently performed at Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio for CBC Radio Show Q, and the set included two amazing new songs entitled, "Rylan" and "I Need My Girl". Both songs are down below, so grab your headphones and enjoy. (via)

From PR - Boucher, who was born in Vancouver, Canada, came to Montreal in 2006. Her experience as a performer is deeply embedded in the DIY loft culture of Montreal, where Grimes was one of the prominent figures in the scene surrounding Lab Synthèse - a 4600 square foot re-appropriated textile factory. She developed in a scene where punk ethos and pop music collide, resulting in a distinct sense of community, religiosity and psychedelic revelry.

Visions arises as Boucher's fourth release in less than two years. Her debut album, Geidi Primes (2010), was followed by Halfaxa (2010), which was arguably one of the first witch-house or lo-fi R&B releases. On Darkbloom (2011), Grimes begins taking her first steps as a producer, bringing together the experimentation behind her early work and a cutting edge pop aesthetic.

Thurston Moore Announces Tour (with Austin Date)

With his divorce from Kim Gordon announced last month the fate of Sonic Youth still appears to be uncertain and some believe that they may have just played their last show as the band. That remains to be seen but Thurston Moore will be touring early next year with his Demolished Thoughts ensemble including a stop in Austin at St. Davids Church. For a pair of dates, fellow Matador signee Kurt Vile will be opening up but sadly that won't include the Austin.

Beauty Ballroom + Debut NYE Event Announced

After 5 years at its current location on 7th St and Red River, The Beauty Bar brand is expanding to a second location, a 700-capacity venue located at 2015 Riverside, on the SE corner of Royal Crest and Riverside. Beauty Bar founder Paul Devitt and Frank Hendrix from Emo's are joining forces to bring this exciting new venue to Austin.

"Frank approached me this summer about his plans to lease a boarded up nightclub near the new Emo's. A month later he asked me if I'd be interested in partnering up" said Devitt. "We became friends when I opened on 7th Street and Frank has always liked the brand."

The Beauty Ballroom will feature state of the art light and sound, a 500-cap dance floor and 200-cap balcony. This second, new Beauty Bar location promises to be one of Austin's premier live music venues with a focus on booking more national and international touring acts while still offering the lounge feel and Beauty Bar aesthetic that patrons around the country have fallen in love with.

Friday is almost here and that means we are getting pretty close to what some would consider one of the best weeks in Austin. For those not able to be here in person there is a ton of good news for you today. First up, PBS will showcase its first-ever LIVE Facebook performance with indie pop-star Lykke Li on Friday, November 4, at 9:00 p.m. ET during a taping for the 37th season of the legendary Austin City Limits, the longest-running music series in television history.

And secondly Fun Fun Fun Fest which also kicks off Friday and will be going on all weekend has teamed up with Pitchfork and announced that the festival will be streaming live on Pitchfork.com November 4 – 6, 2011. Sets will begin streaming around noon [ET] daily. This will be the first time ever that the music of Fun Fun Fun Fest, one of the most progressive independent music festivals in the country, will be available to those outside of Austin, and live. So now no matter where you are you can still get in on the action. Both links are below.

Show Spotlight: Zola Jesus

Zola Jesus, the musical project and stage name of Nika Roza Danilova, will be playing with Xanopticon on Saturday, October 29th at the Mohawk. Often described as dark and gothic, Danilova lists Throbbing Gristle, Diamanda Galas as well as Ian Curtis as influences. Growing up, Danilova was classically trained as an opera singer but began to gravitate toward more rock-oriented music in her teenage years. Yet, it seems that the singer still draws from her earlier training as one listens to her passionate, haunting vocals. Davila has toured with Fever Ray and the xx. Her current tour is in support of her latest album, Conatus, which is her third studio album release.

Zola Jesus' latest video for the track, "Vessel," features Davila against the stark background of the New Mexican desert.

At first glance, Katie Stelmanis appears to be the delicate, girl-next-door type. But her music suggests quite the opposite. As the front-woman of Austra, she creates mysterious dance music that would make for a great soundtrack of an experimental film. (No surprise, then, that Austra’s music videos delve into nude dancers, reptilian deformities, and sporadic images of missiles—a bizarre realm of visual representation that only its music could support.) Through obsessive electronic beats and extended vocal lines, the songs simultaneously evoke excitement and instill a sense of reverence. Stemanis’ commanding voice sings gruesome, passionate lyrics about love and anger that transform her from some sweet-natured girl to a woman cloaked in darkness and rhythm.

"It's kind of crazy but I just locked myself in my room for about a month and didn't leave," Boucher tells Spinner. "I didn't tell anyone I was in Montreal and people just thought I was on tour."Boucher is no stranger to working 16-hour stints, often with no food or communication with the outside world. Made up of two key members, Christopher Owens who is the main writer and Chet "JR" White who plays bass and produces. The band's lead singer, Christopher Owens, is a former member of the Children of God cult.

Upon arriving in San Francisco (via Amarillo, Texas), Owens met White, a Bay Area native who was raised in Santa Cruz, California. White began recording bands in his parents' garage. Upon meeting, the two developed a strong bond and interest in similar music, as well as a shared background in Punk/Hardcore music. Shortly thereafter Owens and White started recording what was to later be their debut album, titled Album.A former member of the band Holy Shit with Ariel Pink and Matt Fishbeck in an interview with Exclaim! magazine, Owens related much of how being part of the Children of God cult informed his childhood and his music. While there, he was not allowed to listen to music from outside the group, but was allowed to watch movies from which he absorbed music like Queen and Guns N' Roses. Girls' Album is an "overflow of expression", as Owens could do whatever he liked on the album without worry for boundaries.

The band released their second full length album Father, Son, Holy Ghost on September 13th

Tonight we kick off the very first night of our new monthly party at The North Door. It is called Junior Painkiller and will be taking place on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. As most of you may know the "Ultra" in Ultra8201 is taken from the Depeche Mode album. Well did you know that album had a secret track titled "Junior Painkiller"? With that in mind I thought it would be the the perfect title for my monthly party. I have carefully crafted a huge playlist for tonight and the drinks will be cheap and plentiful.

To celebrate the kick off we will be giving away a pair of Fun Fun Fun Fest tickets at 11pm. We will be handing out tickets when you enter and you must be present to win. We will also have a full playlist of Fun Fun Fun Fest artists before we draw to get you pumped for the fest!

Residual Kid "Box" EP Release Party and Disastronauts Benefit Tonight at The Mohawk

Austin based band (and Ultra8201 fav) Residual Kid released their debut EP titled "Box" yesterday. Recorded at Blue Train Studios, Box was engineered and produced by Jonas Wilson. The recording consists of 6 original tracks written by all members of the band, showcasing their talent for crafting songs that are diverse and display their range of talent. These are the first 6 songs that the band has written together and more are coming quickly.

The band will be celebrating the release of Box this tonight at the Mohawk during the Disastronauts Benefit show that features additional artists Black Books, La Snacks, and Boy + Kite.

Ximena Sarinana Announces Fall Tour (w/ Austin Date)

Ximena Sariñana (he-MEN-a sa-rin-YAH-na) has announced a US fall tour. The string of dates kick off November 4th in Portland, OR and run through December 22nd in Chicago, IL. Avalanche City and Graffiti 6 will support on select dates. This is Ximena's first US headlining run - it comes on the heels of a nationwide tour with Sia and Oh Land, which included stops at this year's Lollapalooza and Outside Lands festivals.

The 25 year-old Mexican singer, songwriter and keyboardist has had an eventful few months. She released her Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Bird and the Bee) and Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) produced English-language debut on August 2, 2011 to effusive critical acclaim. The New York Daily News called the self-titled release, "One of the most inventive, and pleasing, reinventions of new wave pop in years," Nylon declared it "infectious, fun and just the right amount of poppy," and SPIN named Ximena Sariñana one of the "Best Albums of 2011 So Far." Ximena was also selected as VH1's "You Oughta Know" artist for the month of August.

Austin City Limits Announces Final Two Tapings of The Season: Lykke Li and Wilco

The 37th season of the famed Austin City Limits television show is coming to a close but it's definitely going out with a bang! Lykke Li, who will be performing at next month's Fun Fun Fun Fest will be doing a taping on Friday, Nov. 4th. Having already seen her a few times, we can without a doubt, say she sure puts on a hell of show!

To wrap up the season finale, Wilco will be taking to the ACL Live at the Moody Theater Stage for a two night stand on Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st, with the first night being the taping.

FFF Nites Announced!

Fans will be excited to hear that the 6th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX has just announced this year’s aftershow lineup, where shows will be free to all those with Fun Fun Fun Fest wristbands. Artists performing include Kool Keith, The Felice Brothers, The Thermals, Glass Candy, Dead Confederate, Ty Segall and more… plus appearances from select Fun Fun Fun artists.

FFF NITES were specifically curated to be an extension of the fest itself, and allow for the Fun Fun Fun experience to continue after the park closes. Shows are scheduled at classic Red River venues like the Mohawk, Beerland, Red 7, ND, Beauty Bar, Club De Ville, The Parish, and Empire Automotive. Fun Fun Fun Fest passes now stretch late into the night with the addition of FFF NITES. When asked about this announcement, FFF Founder Graham Williams said, “FFF Nites is a new concept that we are excited about. We wanted to not only host festival acts, but add new acts, make it affordable, and change the way Austin looks at how festival aftershows can be done.”

Fleet Foxes Set To Make An ACL Taping Appearance

Just because a bunch of bands recorded a ton of ACL tapings while they were in town for ACL Festival weekend, you really didn't think that would be end of them for the rest of the year, did you? On Oct. 7th (which is next Friday btw), Fleet Foxes will be performing a set for the longest-running music series in American television.

Ticket information for the taping should be announced very, very soon [UPDATE: Giveaway is going on now] (maybe even later today). To stay up-to-date, you can read the official ACL blog, follow their Facebook, join their mailing list, and befriend them on Twitter. Looks like they're also looking for interns.

The 37th season kicks off this Saturday with performances from Mumford & Sons and Flogging Molly.
