Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest premieres at Violet Crown

BEATS, RHYMES & LIFE: THE TRAVELS OF A TRIBE CALLED QUEST is a documentary film directed by Michael Rapaport about one of the most influential and groundbreaking musical groups in hip-hop history. Having released five gold and platinum selling albums within eight years, A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history, and regarded as iconic pioneers of hip hop. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group’s innovative musical stylings never seems to diminish.

The film includes interviews from the Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Pharrell, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers and Common, all of whom attribute some combination of love, respect, and inspiration drawn from the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest.

It is now playing at Violet Crown Cinema, click HERE for showtimes and tickets.

Last Night: Gorilla Vs Bear Fest at The Granada Theater

Stroked

The folks over at Stereogum have put together a tribute to commemorate the 10 year(?!) anniversary of The Strokes' debut album. The covers, to be expected, are hit or miss, but The Morning Bender's version of "Last Nite" is particularly noteworthy.

Bell | "Chase No Face" Video

Bell first caught our ears a little over three years ago, and although it's been a while since we've heard anything from her, we haven't forgot about her amazing voice. The video below is quite interesting as well. Everything on her face is happening in real-time, via hacked Kinect, laptop and LED projector. Watch behind-the-scenes footage here.

New St. Vincent | "Surgeon" [Stream]

Annie Clark of St. Vincent
Certain people just do a great job of promoting themselves and St. Vincent is no different. Instead of just releasing a new song from her upcoming album Strange Mercy (due out 9/13), she had the idea of unlocking video teasers (four in total), one at a time. As more and more people tweeted about #strangemercy, the videos would culminate into being able to hear the first single. Seriously a great idea!

Summer Camp | "Better Off Without You" [Stream]

Just last month we were treated to a new song ("Nobody Knows You") by Summer Camp. This time the duo has released another new track (listen to "Better Off Without You" down below) off their debut album, which is still in need of helping to fund. If you donate, the band has a list of creative exclusives you can pick from: a signed album, an acoustic gig in your living room, a dinner party prepared by them, or have them write a song about you. There's many more too. So go help them out.

Bon Iver Announce The Release of New Single, 'Holocene'
We've already heard Bon Iver cover Bonnie Raitt. On sale earlier this year as a limited edition Record Store Day exclusive, now everyone will get to buy/hear Justin Vernon covering Peter Gabriel's "Come Talk To Me". The track will accompany the second single "Holycene" (out 9/5 via 4AD) from the brilliant Calgary. (via)

Video: Eleanor Friedberger - "My Mistakes"

"My Mistakes," the first single from Fiery Furnaces frontwoman Eleanor Friedberger's solo debut Last Summer. The video meshes scenes of Friedberger from the past with shots of her today. It's a really fun and creative concept. Keep your eyes open for a cameo appearance from Spoon singer Britt Daniel, who was Friedberger's boyfriend back in the day.

Thanks to Shenay for the tip!

Show Spotlight + Giveaway: Summer Sweat with Mayer Hawthorne

Mayer Hawthrone is making his way to the ATX for a very special DJ set. Hopefully he might add some tracks from his latest project Impressions EP. Having grown up just outside the home of Motown, Detroit Michican, it is little wonder that multi instrumentalist -Mayer Hawthorne has soul pumping through his veins and sites Holland-Dozier-Holland among his biggest influences. I can only imagine all the soul he will be bringing down to us.

If a DJ set from Mayer Hawthorne wasn’t enough, we will also have live music from Soul Track Mind and KP and The Boom Boom. I am super stoked for this incredible line up and to have the show at one of my favorite venues, The Scoot Inn. The party will kick off at 9pm.

We are giving away a pair of tickets today on Twitter so make sure to follow us to win: (@ultra8201)

Warpaint | "Warpaint" Video

We’ve always had the idea to do a video underwater, and were excited when our friend Ted Newsome sent us a treatment, which involved just that. It was an opportunity to create a fantastical world where oxygen, time and style were simply not an issue. Turned out to be far more challenging than we had initially expected, but we pulled through. We’re excited about it and hope you enjoy. - Warpaint

Video: Cults | "Go Outside"

Director's Statement:

To tell the story of Cults' hauntingly beautiful track, "Go Outside", I was inspired to bring the band inside the world of Jim Jones' famous religious cult, Peoples Temple, and the eventual tragedy in Jonestown. Fortunately, when exploring the feasibility of this video I became acquainted with Fielding M. McGehee III, an expert on Peoples Temple history and the primary researcher for the Jonestown Archive. It is thanks to him and his encouragement that I was able to take on this project and through his support gained access to over two and half hours of home videos showing Peoples Temple in Jonestown. For this music video we didn't want to put a spin on the footage or the peoples lives—instead we wanted to re-tell and humanize their story. In order to achieve this we used a combination of stock footage, visual effects and other tricks to embed the band into the historical footage. This was achieved through my collaboration with my visual effects supervisor Bill Gillman and my cinematographer Matthew Lloyd. Lastly, I am moved to say when we completed the video we were able to preview it for some of the survivors of the Jonestown Massacre, who expressed their appreciation of our focus on the lives of the People's Temple members as opposed to exploiting the graphic images of the final tragedy.
