Show Spotlight: BIG KRIT, FREDDIE GIBBS, SMOKE DZA at The Mohawk Tonight!!

From Knuckle Rumbler:

We are so excited to be bringing you an all star hip hop lineup next week. Big K.R.I.T. the rap phenomenon that came of Mississippi, who’s critically acclaimed mixtape ‘KRIT Wuz Here’ has been riding, leaning, and crawling through car stereo systems on repeat since it’s drop. Not only was KRIT one of the 2011 XXL Freshman, but he also headlined the Nah Right and Smoking Section’s Grand Ole Party. Not only does KRIT rap but he makes his own beats. If that wasn’t enough, Freddie Gibbs will also be joining KRIT on the bill. Gibbs played an AMAZING surprise set recently at the Grand Ole Party, also an XXL Freshman, a Pitchfork favorite, and has been compared to sounding like Tupac mixed with Bun B who he has now collaborated with (video shot in Austin). Smoke DZA, a Smoker’s Club favorite joins the lineup to make this one of the biggest up and coming hip hop shows this year.

Show Spotlight: Politics at Beauty Bar Tonight (3/30)

We are sponsoring a last minute show at Beauty Bar tonight with Politics and since we didn't give you that much notice it's only fair that there's no cover. Doors are at 9:30 and the show starts at 10pm. Check out the video for one of my favorite tracks from the band. It's called "Warning" and it was taken at the Bleet Up last December. Enjoy and see you tonight!

Show Spotlight: Austin Music People Launch Party at ACL Live this Thursday (3/31)

Austin Music People Launch Party & Concert Series: Blue October, Ghostland Observatory, Bright Light Social Hour & More!

This Thursday Austin Music People is holding their launch party and only a few tickets are still available. A great show for a great new organization so get on it.

From PR:

Austin Music People (AMP) Executive Director Paul Oveisi announced today that the 501 c (6) non-profit organization will host their launch party and benefit on Thursday, March 31st at ACL Live at The Moody Theater. AMP is dedicated to preserving the Austin music culture by working with Austin music businesses, musicians and fans.

To mark the launch, AMP has brought together a diverse lineup of all-star Austin musicians to represent the equally diverse lineup of fans in our community. The benefit/launch party will take place in Austin’s newest multi media live music venue (and the new home of Austin City Limits), ACL Live at The Moody Theater.

“This is an exciting day for Austin,” says Oveisi. “For the first time, we as a music community consisting of businesses, bands, and fans have all come together under one vision to support what we truly love about Austin. What we have learned is that we are all Austin Music People in our own way, and I hope this event helps raise awareness so even more people will get involved. Our city is changing, and it is wonderful to know that we now have a unified voice and can work together on issues as we grow.”

The AMP benefit will feature short sets by such renowned Austin acts as Ghostland Observatory, Blue October, Court Yard Hounds, Alejandro Escovedo, Brownout!, Bavu Blakes, The Coveters and Bright Light Social Hour.

“This bill is Austin Music People, and I am honored to be included as a performer and a member,” says Adrian Quesada of Brownout!.

All tickets to the event include a one-year AMP membership with special benefits:

$20 Community Membership – ticket to the floor and balcony and membership that includes invites to exclusive AMP events, special discounts and giveaways.

$250 Professional Membership – ticket to mezzanine seating as well as a pre-show VIP Happy Hour reception with AMP’s Board and professional members. Plus, AMP membership includes regular professional networking gatherings, project opportunities, key updates, invites to AMP events, and special discounts and giveaways.

Tickets can be purchased at www.acl-live.com and www.austinmusicpeople.org. Doors are 6:00pm.

New Song from The National | "Think You Can Wait" [Stream]

The National wrote the song, "Think You Can Wait" with guest vocal appearing from Sharon Van Etten after watching the new Paul Giamatti-starring film Win Win.

Per an interview lead singer, Matt Berninger did with HitFix:
I caught up with frontman Matt Berninger on my sixth night at the festival, and he explained how "Win Win" director Tom McCarthy was a "huge fan" of the band and had been listening to their music as he crafted his Paul Giamatti-starring film.
"We knew he was a serious director," Berninger said, mentioning that he enjoyed McCarthy's directorial debut "Station Agent" and 2007's "The Visitor."
The material of "Win Win" was "just the kind of thing our music would work well for."
"It's about very normal and good people trying to do their best and the struggle to be good," Berninger says.
So upon viewing the movie while on tour, Berninger began cobbling together melody ideas and working with his wife on lyrics. When the band returned to Brooklyn, they hit cohort Aaron Dessners' home studio with Brooklyn neighbor and frequent show opener Van Etten and producer Peter Katis. All in all, "Think You Can Wait" was only completed a month ago.
"This was the first time we had written specifically for a film," Berninger told me. "We wouldn't normally do that, but Tom McCarthy's movies are so good. Watching ['Win Win'] helped inspire the way the song was written. I mean, it isn't at all narrative to what happens in the movie -- we don't mention Paul Giamatti by name or anything. But it was fun, and it's a good song, we're very proud of it."

SXSW 2011 Film Spotlight: Taken By Storm

Head to your record collection and grab a handful of albums at random. Chances are you'll be holding at least one piece of iconic imagery from English graphic designer, Storm Thorgerson.

Taken By Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis documents the life and work of the man responsible for so many of rock's visual masterpieces. His album cover resume includes Led Zeppelin, Yes, The Mars Volta, Muse and several others. But it his work with Pink Floyd where he is at his best. It is a nearly impossible feat to listen to any Floyd album and not conjure up images of factories, light breaking through prisms, or industry "suits" on fire.

Taken By Storm premiers tonight at 9pm at the Alamo Ritz with additional screening throughout the week.
