Show Spotlight + Giveaway: The Black and White Years and Politics at Lamberts (1/29)

The Black and White Years w/ Politics

Tomorrow night should be a good one. The Black and White Years have been playing high profile shows around town for a while now but here we have them playing a very intimate show at Lambert's [MAP]. If you know this spot you know that the capacity is limited to only 150 people so this would be an ideal time to catch the band. To sweeten the deal Politics will be opening the show. If you read this site regularly you are well aware of them and if not let me be the first to highly suggest checking them out.

The Black and White Years (above) recently released their latest LP Patterns and are gearing up for an upcoming 101X Homegrown performance while Politics (below) are wrapping up their debut and will performing new material tomorrow night.

This is a great show and we want to send you to it for FREE. Go check out our Twitter (@ultra8201) page for a chance to win a pair of tickets!

Learning Secrets 7th Anniversary w/ Kisses + Interview / Ticket Giveaway

Learning Secrets is turning 7. That is 7 years of this fine duo bringing some of the most exciting up and coming acts to town as well as legendary DJ's and promoting the finest this town has to offer. The thing that has always stood out to me about them is that they never do anything that doesn't live up to the highest of standards. They book bands months in advance of any hype and always create a vibe at their events that can't help but make you feel that you are at the right place. This Saturday they are celebrating their anniversary with a huge party at The ND.

It comes as no surprise that they would have an exciting act flown into town for the event in the form of Kisses. If you aren't familiar with the band you should be. Let's just say that if you miss this you will probably be kicking yourself in the next few months. We took some time to interview the band last week and have some music up so you can study up on this great band.

All the party details are below and we are giving away a pair of tickets to the party on Twitter tomorrow so go follow if you aren't already. Happy Anniversary Learning Secrets!!!!!!

Interview with Jesse Kivel of Kisses

You've listed Alec R. Costandinos, Grace Jones and Cerrone as influences. Are there any more contemporary artists who have influenced your sound?

I would say a lot of Swedish groups, the Sincerely Yours Crew...TTA, Air France, Jens, The Whitest Boy Alive...

In "Midnight Lover," you sing, "I want to take you out for a nice steak dinner." One can't help but smile at this line. Can you give us any insight as to why you decided to use it and how it's cohesive with the rest of the album?

I forget what compelled me to write it but I instantly enjoyed it. Not sure if it works with the rest of the album in that it is a very cool and confident line that i think is very much a character that only exists on that song or maybe one other. The album is kind of insecure lyrically if you look at it.

What are the most amazing things people can do?

Anything that a person finds difficult for them personally and they overcome to me classifies as amazing. It could be asking a girl out or performing a show...anything really

Can you give us some insight into the creative process behind Heart of the Nightlife?

Basically I wrote the tracks on nylon string guitar and wrote them all in a row over several months. After Princeton finished recording our first album I went into our garage and recorded it on my own.

Are you both originally from LA? How has LA influenced you as artists?

I was born in NYC and Z was born in Providence. I grew up in LA though... LA is just a place with no seasons so I think it developed my imagination, forcing me to get into a mood even if it didn't exist on the outside.

You've done some touring this year. What has that taught you about yourselves as a band? How has it influenced the music you will create in the future?

It taught me that we could do it! I dont think it will influence the recording of the next record at all. The live show is a way to express the recording but we are very much a recording project first!

Interpol | 2011 Spring North American Tour Dates :: w/ Austin date (Austin Music Hall)

After catching Interpol at Stubb's last October, the band will be making a return in a few months time with a show at Austin Music Hall.  Tickets for the April 21st show will run $35 and go on sale this Saturday (1/22) at 10 am.

It's just too bad that there's already a concert scheduled at ACL's new Moody Theater at the W Hotel (stupid Jonny Land & George Thorogood). I've heard the new theater is amazing and I only imagine that would be the ideal venue for one of our favorite bands. Just a thought.

Show Spotlight: Shearwater - The Island Arc at Central Presbyterian Church (1/15)

If you don't have plans tomorrow evening, this sounds like an amazing event to attend.

As per Matablog:
“On January 15th, 2011, Shearwater will present The Island Arc, the trilogy of albums that includes 2006′s Palo Santo, 2008′s Rook, and 2010′s The Golden Archipelago, in a single, complete performance at the beautiful Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas.
This will be a one-time-only event – we’ve never performed these thematically-linked albums in order, and probably never will again. We’ve also never played some of the songs live at all. We’ll be joined by old and new friends for this show, and we promise a really special evening for everyone.
The Island Arc isn’t a farewell show, not by a long shot, but it does feel like a bookend. It’s a way for us to look back and to clear the way for what’s next – which, whatever it is, is going to be quite different from these records.
We begin recording a new album in early 2011. " - Jonathan Meiburg

Tickets are only $15. Purchase them here.

The Strokes Announce a March Release Date For New Album

About time is all we have to say! According to an interview with the BBC, bassist Nikolai Fraiture admits the band have finally finished their untitled fourth album and it's in the mixing stage with a release date scheduled sometime in March.

[The Strokes Official Site]

As per the BBC:
Speaking to Radio 1's Zane Lowe bassist Nikolai Fraiture confirmed that the follow-up to 2006's First Impressions Of Earth is "in the mixing stage".
He added that he felt the album would return to the New York band's "classic sound".
"Sonically, I feel it's the album which should have been made between Room On Fire and First Impressions Of Earth."
However, the bass player admitted that initial writing sessions for the album last year had been "weird" following a prolonged break.
In the five years since their last album four of the five members have released solo albums or been part of side projects.
"We didn't really break up but we didn't see each other for a long time," said Nikolai Fraiture.
"When you get back together there was a lot of weird energy flowing around. There are different dynamics in the group in different ways."
This time around lead singer Julian Casablancas recorded his vocals separately from the band, a different method from the way they've done it in the past.
Fraiture said: "Usually we're always in a room and changing stuff and doing it all together. It's all a learning experience."
In summer 2010 the band played a handful of high profile UK gigs at the Isle Of Wight and Rockness festivals but did not debut any new material.
"We didn't really want to play anything new because in the age of the internet we didn't want the new songs to be heard in a crappy way," admitted Fraiture.
"Those festival shows we wanted to give the fans what they wanted."
Whilst tour dates in support of the new album are yet to be announced the bassist confirmed the band would be "touring around the world".

Cults Announce Tour (w/ SXSW Dates) / Sign to Columbia

From PR:

Mysterious new pop act, Cults, materialized on the internet early last year but, similar to the existence of cultists, they were untraceable. Yet to those that had experienced their offerings, they were undeniable. The band, who assumed the identities of Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin, released only three tracks: “Go Outside,” “Most Wanted,” “The Curse,” and then a fourth this summer “Oh My God.” They began to spread rapidly amongst their engaged followers. Then in late 2010 the band signed with In The Name Of / Columbia Records. The label will release the band’s full length debut in May 2011.

After a few highly entrancing CMJ appearances, in which the New York Times explained that “in a short period of time Cults (had) refined their style, gotten it down cold, made it elegant” and Spin Magazine noted that the band “sounded spot-on” with their “'60s girl-group vibes with twee indie-pop sounds,” Cults will head out on their first headlining tour this April. In March the band will do a handful of dates with Small Black and Asobi Seksu in and out of SXSW.

Cults are in the studio now finishing their full-length with Shane Stoneback (Sleigh Bells, Vampire Weekend.) To hear music from the band: http://cults.bandcamp.com/

Toro Y Moi Announce Tour Dates (w/ SXSW Dates)

Chaz Bundick aka Toro Y Moi released his debut "Causers of This" early last year and we really didn't fall in love with it until only recently. So much so that it landed a spot on our Top 25 Albums of 2010 (#16). I guess being so late on it comes with it's own merits because he is set to release his next album on Feb 22nd.

The initial idea was to release both albums in the same year. One electronic and one featuring live instrumentation and although that didn't pan out the upcoming "Underneath The Pine" is the latter of the two albums. In support of the release Toro Y Moi will embark on an extensive tour for the first part of 2011 including a stop in Austin for SXSW. We have a full list of tour dates below and a link to stream his latest Still Sound.
