Video: The Flaming Lips on Letterman

Hands down the best sounding musical guest I have ever seen on Letterman in a while. And I have to say it's nice seeing the bands ability to give a great performance without all the theatrics that they have become known for. The band will be in Austin on Sunday October 10th for the Austin City Limits Festival. They play the AMD stage at 6:00pm.

Interpol Announces Fall Tour (w/ Austin Date)

It's been posted everywhere and if you follow us on Twitter (@ultra8201) you knew about this a couple of days ago but this band is a favorite over here so we have to give them a proper post. Interpol will head out on the road this fall and will be touring North America extensively. I am listening to the upcoming album (Self Titled, due Sept 7th) as I type and am digging it. Although I still can't figure out why they chose "Barricade" as the lead track? Not a fan.

You will get your opportunity to see these new tracks and new bassist Dave Pajo live this fall and make your own decision. The band will be in Austin at Stubbs on October 28th.

Show Spotlight: The Authors and Politics at Lamberts | Friday (7/30)

I am really excited about this one. Two of Austin's most exciting up and coming bands playing on one stage. A bold statement but a true statement. The Authors will be taking the stage for the first time in a few months after taking time off to record their first full length "Get Haunted" which will be available in September. Politics will be offering support after playing to a full house a couple of weeks ago at Stubb's. I suggest everyone get there early on Friday night. Lambert's is small and this show will fill up fast. Don't miss out on a chance to see two of Austin's brightest in such an intimate setting.

Guards

There doesn't seem to be much info about Guards, but I imagine that'll change in the near future. The band has a 60's style sound that features lo-fi guitars definitely worthy of a listen. Hear all seven songs from their EP down below, including standout tracks, "Resolution of One", "I See It Coming", and "Sail It Slow" featuring Cults.

Download the EP for free at their bandcamp page.

THIS NIGHT ISN'T ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE OTHER THAN RAISING SOME MONEY TO SAVE THESE ANIMALS!
We're asking for a suggested donation of $10, but if all you can spare is $3 then that's totally radical too! Donating is awesome! Doing it whilst partying harder than you have all summer is even more bodacious, and we want to do it together with you!

Check the deets:
-- For every Lone Star you order, Birds Barbershop is gonna donate an extra $1 bill to the night! AMAZING!
-- We're super psyched to have both Bodytronix and Candi & The Strangers sharing the dance floor with us!
-- Both The Glitoris and the fine people of Knuckle Rumbler are getting in on the cause as well and will be on hand lending support!

We hope to see you all there for this amazing chance to make a difference!

2010 Fun Fun Fun Fest: Lineup Leak #2

As promised, the organizers of Fun Fun Fun Fest have leaked another round of bands to play the 2-day event this upcoming Nov. 6th & 7th. In addition to the first leak, which included Best Coast, Suicidal Tendencies, and Slick Rick, this time around Snapcase, Dirty Projectors, Yelle, Cap' N Jazz, and The Gories will be joining in on the fun (pun very intended).

Andy Warhol's Birthday | Friday August 6th at The Mohawk

http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/7492/warholposter72fixed.jpg

Not since '65 has this city felt so alive. In honor of the hero of American Pop Art, the Mohawk will be hosting a party for Andy Warhol's Birthday on Friday, August 6th, 2010. In the tradition of its previous all-out parties like ATX Emerge and Massive Art Attack, Massive Beacon has put together another rowdy night of debauchery. Those who come will have their ears and eyeballs treated to a finely tuned sensory overload of bands, DJs, decorations, costumes, interactive art booths and of course enough swag to go around.

The event coordinators have taken every step to make sure that Warhol's spirit is present. Massive Beacon will transform the Mohawk’s upstairs patio into an immersive environment with throwback decor, a photo booth by Trevor Ray Thompson, and live stop-motion animation at a booth called The Edge of Imagination Station, created by one of the most unique San Marcos-based inventors of recent years, Johnny Villarreal.

In true factory-party form there will be a live screen-printing set up, manned by Austin’s arts enthusiast Twin Villain, in association with (th)ink Tank. They will have apparel for sale and printing on-site but partygoers can also have their own clothes printed on during the show.

And of course there will be tripped-out performances from local psyche-rockers Ringo Deathstarr, Hatchet Wound, Politics, and Prayer For Animals, and a DJ set from the perennially fashionable Team Fabrication.

There will even be a factory-person look-a-like contest with a grip of prizes from our sponsors, judged by local socialite Richard Gonzalez (me!) of the blog Ultra8201.

And partygoers can eat like Manhattanites, with free sausage bites and veggie treats from Frank, Austin's premier venue for cold beer and artisan sausage. Those provisions will last until 10:30 (so get there early!), but Massive Beacon will leave the first 250 people through the door with something to take home: $10 gift cards for Frank’s hot dogs.

To top it all off, the Mohawk will be adorned with the trimmings of Warhol's legendary shindigs: red and silver balloons and stacks of reproduced Brillo boxes.

The party starts at 9 and is $7 with an RSVP on Do512 or $10 at the door.

Andy Warhol's Birthday Party is sponsored by Frank Hot Dogs, Ultra8201, Birds Barbershop, and KVRX 91.7 FM, and is presented by Massive Beacon.

The Weekend

We have all sorts of things for you to get into this weekend so I thought why not make a post to remind everyone of where they need to be. Tomorrow night at Stubbs we are presenting two great up and coming local bands. Politics and Candi and The Strangers will be taking stage starting at 10pm and the cover is only $5.

Then Sunday morning comes the game we have been waiting for. The World Cup title match. We have teamed up with The ND, Knuckle Rumbler, The Mind of Adi, Frank, Recspec and Austin Town Hall to present the game on a 30ft HD screen with plenty of seating, full bar service and Orion spinning during the breaks. After a month of bar hopping to catch the game I can't think of a better way to watch the title match.

And one more thing. We want to thank everyone that voted for us on the ACL Festival website and got us picked as one of the most popular blogs in Texas. We will be doing profiles on The xx, The Morning Benders and Girls for the Artist Discovery series and it will be featured on the ACL website in starting in August. So again THANK YOU!!

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros | Live at KGSR

Earlier today I was lucky enough to sit in on the on air performance by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros at KGSR. The band is playing the very sold out show at La Zona Rosa tonight so it was nice to get in an intimate acoustic performance before tonights craziness. The band played four songs (hopefully you listened in) and were interviewed about the time the band spent in Marfa. I was able to get some video of the band performing "Home" for you all to check out. Enjoy.

Austin's Sunset have just finished a new album and I imagine will be testing some of those new songs on the road (tour dates down below).

While on tour they'll also be selling a "greatest hits" CD, which they really consider an intro to the band's many releases over the past two years and will also come with an accompanying DVD of live performaces. As of now, this will be a "tour exclusive" item that will set you back only $5. (via)

Show Spotlight: The Zoo with Congorock Tonight (7/1) at Beauty Bar

Tonight!!! Knuckle Rumbler and The Peen Scene Present:

THE ZOO WITH CONGOROCK (FOOL’S GOLD RECORDS / ITALY) at Beauty Bar
$5 All Night Long
Doors at 9pm

Italy’s recent electro renaissance has catapulted banger after banger out into the world at large. Yet in the middle of this distorted beat onslaught, young upstart CONGOROCK has managed to distinguish himself in style and approach by synthesizing his influences – from Dancemania 12″s and hardcore punk to video game cheat codes and Magic: The Gathering - into a unique world of sound all his own. He has an uncanny knack for making music that is both pulverizing and funky, throwing in clever twists and production flourishes where others would be content to merely crank up the volume.

Knuckle Rumbler and the legendary Peen Scene is bringing this internationally gifted artist directly to your face tonight at Beauty Bar. Supported by DJ Orion and uLovei, this will be a night that will result in fireworks a few days early. So come jump start the holiday weekend right!
