Show Spotlight: Decider presents The Black and White Years, The White White Lights, Bad Veins and Built By Snow tonight at Emo's

L_04c16f10d44746989844c01be3b92b99

It should be ridiculously packed and if anyone wants to put us on the guest list feel free to do so. But seriously this is a good line up and everyone needs to get down to Emo's tonight and check this out. If you read our blog regularly you know the names well. Get on it.

From Do512:

The Black and White Years has become a fixture in Austin’s legendary club scene fueled by its shows, which are notable for the amount of energy both on and off the stage, and the success of the single, “Power to Change.” Earlier this year the Austin Music Awards rewarded them with five awards including a trophy for Best New Band, and in addition, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads, Modern Lovers) won the award for Best Producer of the Year for his work on the album. The Black and White Years will headline the big Decider party at Emo's on Friday that also features local faves the White White Lights and Built By Snow.

Monolith Festival Spotlight : (MF) Doom

IMG_2015 by slay1975.

Patterning his persona and logo after the Marvel Comics supervillain Dr. Doom, the man behind MF (Metal Face) Doom's iron mask is actually Daniel Dumile, aka Zev Love X, a member of former Big Apple hip-hoppers KMD. After years spent recording with KMD and then spent in label "limbo" Zev supposedly went underground for 5 years nursing his wounds and swearing revenge for the industry that so badly "deformed" him. The mask he wears constantly is a part of the concept. It was also the subject of a lot of criticism during last years Rock The Bells tour where he was repeatedly accused of using an double on stage and taking in the money from the show while not even attending. Whether or not it's true remains to be seen but it should make for an interesting appearance at this years festival.

The xx :: "Teardrops" (Womack & Womack Cover) & 2009 North American Tour Dates :: w/ Austin date (Mohawk)

We haven't been able to stop listening to the debut album from London band The xx. It will definitely be on our favorite albums of the year list, and may even end up cracking the top 5. It really is that good! The album is currently on sale at the iTunes store and even includes a bonus cover of Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire".

We'd like to share a track with you that's not on the album. It's a cover of the 1988 song "Teardrops" by Womack & Womack (listen to the original version here), which also appeared on Elton John's Duets album in 1993 (he sang it with K.D. Lang).

WOXY comes to Austin, instantly fits right in by having a BBQ at Scoot.

I Heart WOXY by sprocket87.

As we mentioned a few weeks ago the wonderful online radio station WOXY.com will be making it's way down to Austin, TX and setting up camp. When we first heard the news we were really excited because what better place than Austin for them to go? Imagine the possibilities for them to record live performances with all the bands coming through town. And now maybe they can invite us to come check out these performances? hint hint...

Well now the good people of WOXY are in town and are kicking things off with a welcome party at Scoot Inn next Sunday 9/6. Setting things off right they will have Black Before Red, TV Torso, English Teeth and Martin Crane all performing. And if that's not enough there will also be Tito's Vodka, Sweet Leaf Tea, BBQ and sweet drink specials. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday.

Welcome to Austin WOXY!

New Music Go Music Video :: "Just Me"

Earlier this month, we were treated to the first video ("Warm in the Shadows") from the 70s sounding group Music Go Music. Now the large ensemble is back with another song, this one entitled "Just Me". (via GvB)

Their debut album Expressions drops Oct. 6th via Secretly Canadian. The band also made their first live appearance in Los Angeles last night as they played with Rainbow Arabia and Tommy Santee Claws at Bordello. Hopefully some pics and videos will appear shortly from some of those LA bloggers.

Monolith Festival Spotlight : Thunderheist

Thought this would be a good way to kick things off seeing as they will also be in Austin on Thursday. The Canadian duo Thunderheist aka Grahm Zilla and MC Isis have been playing together since 2005. Easily described as electronic music the group started making music before they even met going the passing of mp3's route before official collaborations began. The track 'Jerk It' (below) was featured in the film The Wrestler giving the band some notoriety. The group will be taking stage at Monolith on Sept 12. If you can't wait until then the band will be performing in Austin this Thursday (8/27). The show is only five bucks with an RSVP.

Tickets ($25) are currently on sale, but it's anyone's guess to how much longer they'll be available. Don't miss this band live!

New Hockey Video :: "Song Away"

Hockey is a band that's been on our radar every since we caught them here in Austin during SXSW. We were also fortunate enough to see them again a few weeks back at a free concert at The Granada in Dallas.

Hockey's debut album Mind Chaos is due out Oct. 25th via Capitol.

Monolith Music Festival Spotlights

[MonolithArchive.jpg]

We decided that starting this year we would make it a point to try out a new festival every year. Of course we are going to cover the Austin trio (SXSW, ACL and Fun Fun Fun) but over the last few years we have also made it out to Coachella and Lollapalooza on multiple occasions.

Since there are so many new festivals popping up all over the country this year we figured we would try out the Monolith Music Festival at Red Rocks in Colorado. As we have done in the past we will be "spotlighting" the artists on the bill to help everyone get familiar. We figured this could also be helpful to those that won't be attending since a majority are playing other festivals or even as a way to find out about some new bands.

All of this will lead up to our coverage of the festival on September 12-13th. The spotlights will begin popping up later today and we will also begin doing the same for Austin City Limits  artists later this month. And then Fun Fun Fun Fest peeps shortly after that.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Announces 2009 Line Up

It's finally here in all it's glory and we are very pleased with the way that it turned out. We will be doing spotlights on the artists very soon so keep an eye out for that. Until then check it out...

We'll also be checking out the band a few weeks earlier at this year's Monolith Festival. Tickets ($110) are still on sale for the Sept. 12th-13th festival at Red Rocks in Colorado.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Replace Beastie Boys at ACL

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
After weeks of speculation across the net and many conversations with friends asking who would be replacing the Beastie Boys vacant spot during Friday night's ACL, we finally have an answer to share with everyone. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are officially locked in to the other Friday night headlining spot opposite Kings of Leon.

In addition to Karen O and company, Raphael Saadiq has been added to the Friday lineup (5:30-6:30) on the Lady Bird Lake Stage and Ben Sollee will be performing on the Austin Ventures Stage (12:30-1:30) on Sunday afternoon. This only leaves the 7:30-8:30 timeslot on the Lady Bird Lake Stage (due to Lily Allen pulling out) as the only hole left to fill. (via Austin360)

Lily Allen No Longer Performing at this Year's ACL

Terrible, terrible news today! In addition to the Beastie Boys cancelling their ACL performance, you can chalk up another Friday night subtraction. According to a story on Austin 360, Lily Allen is no longer on the ACL grid, and her official site and myspace don't have the concert listed either. No word on why as of yet. Seriously, she was one of the artists we were the most excited to catch at the fest! Bummer!

C3 is in the process of finding a replacement and could have something to announce as early as next week. Also, still no word on the Beastie Boys replacement either. We'll keep you posted.

The Lennings release video for "Section C" | Play at Club Mixx tonight.

As we mentioned a few days ago The Lennings recently completed shooting a video for the track Section C. They sent it over to us and we thought we would share it with you. The band is playing a show tonight at 10pm at Club Mixx (6th and Red River). We haven't checked out the venue yet but they are working hard on booking live music these days. Definitely worth checking out.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Leaks : Day 2

The leaks continue to come and today's are:

New Videos from The Walkmen | "On The Water" & Guggenheim Performances

The new video for The Walkmen's "On The Water" is a gorgeous CGI creation. Watch the bunnies run for cover from a hunter and his dog under a dark cloudy sky. (via)

"On The Water" comes from the latest album from The Walkmen, the brilliant You & Me. Looking back the album should have been included on our top albums list last year. Hindsight is great, isn't it?

______________________________

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Manhattan museum The Guggenheim started a new concert series called It Came From Brooklyn to showcase some of Brooklyn's finest bands performing in the Frank Lloyd Wright rotunda. The series kicked off last week with performances by The Walkmen, High Places and The Brooklyn Steppers, and also included readings of Walt Whitman by Colson Whitehead in between sets. Watch as Ray Concepcion films three gems ("In The New Year", "On The Water", "Red Moon") in his own unique style from The Walkmen's most recent album. (via The FADER)

In the near future, (September 25th to be exact) The Guggenheim will be presenting music by Julian Plenti (Paul Banks of Interpol) and I'm In You, readings from Rivka Galchen and Hampton Fancher, and comedian Eugene Mirman as MC. Seriously, how cool would it be to attend this? Stayed tuned to The Guggenheim's official site for ticket sale announcements.

Them Crooked Vultures (the supergroup) give short video preview.

The new supergroup Them Crooked Vultures consisting of the Foo Fighters Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones just gave fans a preview of the upcoming songs with a 33 second video preview (below). Sounds pretty damn good to me, especially since supergroups almost always suck. But as long as you have Grohl on drums where he belongs, what can go wrong?
