printsfornon_blobs_900_withrare_froot_may2009

From the SIMS website:
“More musicians flock to Austin every year in search of an inclusive and inspiring community in which to work. Unfortunately, with the rising cost of living and increasing competition for jobs in the music business, many of these musicians find themselves struggling financially and emotionally. The challenges of being a musician can include personal issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and alcohol and substance abuse.

Nearly 1,500 musicians have bettered their lives through SIMS services. “SIMS saved my life,” is a quote that has been repeated by SIMS clients throughout the years. SIMS relies on community support to continue its vital services.”As such, Tripp Custom T-Shirts and Knuckle Rumbler hope to do their part to give back. Each month ‘Prints for Non-Profit’ will feature local artist’s design and will be available at Tripp Custom T-Shirts for printing. Tripp Custom T-Shirts has committed to donating $5 for every ‘Prints for Non-Profit’ shirt sold to the SIMS Foundation. These prints will be available in-store, throughout the duration of the campaign and will feature new designs from your favorite Austin bands and musicians each month. Girl in a Coma To Play Waterloo In-Store (6/1)

June is gonna be an insane music month here in Austin! To start things off, San Antonio's Girl in a Coma will be performing at Waterloo Records this Monday (June 1st). The show starts at 5pm, but as always you may want to get there a littler earlier. We're hopeful they'll have copies of their new album Trio B.C. available to purchase before it's official release on Tuesday.

Girl in a Coma will also be performing on Saturday, June 6th at Emo's (outside) with support from The Boxing Lesson. Purchase those tickets ($10) here.

Also read a piece the SA Current did on GIAC this week.

Here We Go Magic :: Daytrotter, Laundromatinee, Tour w/ Grizzly Bear

Here We Go Magic have had a fairly successful year so far. In addition to playing numerous venues around Austin during SXSW (including a WOXY session), they've spent the month of May making the rounds on Daytrotter and MOKB's Laundromatinee series.

Currently on tour with blog darlings Grizzly Bear, they'll both be joining us again here in Austin on June 16th at The Parish. We hope you have your tickets, cause this ones been SOLD OUT since early May! Great news though, both bands will be back to play this year's Austin City Limits Festival.

Dan Auerbach and The Fast Five (Hacienda and My Morning Jacket's drummer, Patrick Hallahan) recorded a new video for "Heartbroken, In Disrepair" out in a Texas field. If you don't already have it yet, make sure you pick up the Black Keys frontman's solo album Keep It Hid.

Animal Collective DJ Set at Waterloo Records on June 5th | 5pm

Waterloo Records just announced that Animal Collective will be doing a DJ set in store before the bands very SOLD OUT show on June 5th at Stubb's. Not a full on in store performance but if you didn't get tickets this is better than nothing. Plus I am sure they will probably be incorporating some of the visuals they have been mentioning as part of their next release. Either way I doubt it will suck....

Animal Collective Live DJ Set | Waterloo Records
June 5th at 5pm (Get there early!!!)

UPDATE**** This appears to have been cancelled but according to Waterloo it's not 100% confirmed yet. As soon as we get an official confirmation we will let you know.

UPDATE #2 ***** They will be in store but it's just says they will be making an appearance and signing copies of their albums for fans. Apparently no DJ set but you never know.

Tonight: The Virgins, Lissy Trullie and Anya Marina at Emo's

Tonight is one of those rare nights where not only do you have a great line up of artists on one bill but they are booked to play the inside stage at Emo's when they could easily fill the outside stage. Lucky for us that stage is booked and we get a great show in an intimate setting. The only problem with this is that everyone needs to hurry because it will probably sell out.

Headlining is New York latest buzz band The Virgin's. We got hooked on their E.P last year and missed them during their previous visits to Austin. Their single Rich Girls was easily one of the most addicting tracks I heard all last year and their self titled debut will be available on June 2nd so we should be getting a good preview of that. They will also be back in Austin for the Austin City Limits Festival later this year.

Lissy Trullie caught our attention this year at The Fader Fort during SXSW. It was early and we were just starting on the first drink of the day when this girl comes on stage and plays this extremely catchy cover of Hot Chips "Ready on the Floor". Obviously this caught everyones attention so we made our way closer to the stage and watched her deliver an excellent set.

And opening up will be Anya Marina who up until a few days ago I didn't know too much about. I gave it one listen and was hooked. She worked with Britt Daniel of Spoon on tracks from her latest album and is definitely the type of opener you do not miss. I have had the worst luck with openers lately so I will be getting there extra early. You should too.

Glasvegas was just here for SXSW and if you missed them, you're in luck. The Scottish foursome will be returning to Austin on August 3rd to perform at Emo's a few days before they head to Chicago for Lollapalooza. Joining them on the bill will be Ida Maria, with tickets ($15) set go on sale this Saturday at 10am.

The National Debut A New Song

The National were in CBC's Studio Q recently and performed a new song, tentatively titled, "The Runaway" from their much anticipated fifth album (which has no release date as of yet). I definitely recommend using headphones if you got em'.

Our friends Consequence of Sound also have another new song entitled, "Blood Buzz Ohio" the band played at live performance a few days ago in Montreal.

New Yeah Yeah Yeahs Video :: "Heads Will Roll"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs new video for their second single of It's Blitz, "Heads Will Roll" includes a Michael Jackson wolfman impersonator dancing up a storm, then gets angry and decides to decapitate YYYs at the end. It was directed by Richard Ayoade, who was also in charge of Arctic Monkeys' Live At The Apollo DVD.

[Via NME]

Yeah Yeah Yeahs just finished performing at the Sasquatch Festival this weekend. You can also catch them on tour with their first leg of U.S. dates, starting with a performance at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago this evening.

For all of our friends in El Paso, YYYs just announced a show on June 10th at Club 101, with tickets ($25) already on sale. Don't procrastinate!

Ultra8201 and BleachOnline present The Morakestra and The White White Lights June 4th at The Parish

Inverted by you.

Fresh off our first showcase earlier this month we are now teaming up with BleachOnline to bring yet another fantastic line up. The show is going down at The Parish [Map] on Thursday, June 4th. This time around we will be celebrating the release of The Morakestra's new album and opening duties will go to some familiar faces, The White White Lights, who were so awesome at our show last month we couldn't resist having them back.

The Morakestra who split their time between Austin and El Paso, Texas are preparing to release Witness To Connection on June 2nd via Stratking Records and of course it will be available at the show for purchase. The album was produced at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, TX with Gabe Gonzalez and Jim Ward (Sparta, Sleepercar) sharing production credits. Check out the track "Tell You Something" available below. After the June 4th show the band will embark on a short tour including a stop in Dallas on June 11th with fellow Austinite's The Black and White Years at the House of Blues and The Viper Room in Hollywood on June 24th.

The White White Lights by City On Fire.

And of course getting things started are some personal favorites around here, The White White Lights. Who in addition to playing our first showcase last month and absolutely killing it have been playing some fantastic sets around town including 101X's Homegrown Live, ATX Emerge and Art Disaster showcases at SXSW and a live set on KUT Radio. They apparently have been spending most of their time recording as of late so it will be nice to see the results of those sessions. If you missed them at our last showcase consider this your second chance.

The Presets New Video :: "Kicking and Screaming"

The Presets sophomore album Apocalypso still gets regular on my iPod. It's a great album (it was #12 on our top 25 list last year)! The duo are still throwing out the jams from their second disc and decided to put out a video for the first song on the album, "Kicking and Screaming". It's set in front of a huge crowd at one of their live performances.

Gvsb Presents (Live in Dallas) :: White Denim, PVC Street Gang, Harlem, and Fight Bite

Trust us, we know June is gonna be a busy concert month here in Austin (Passion Pit, Helio Sequence, Animal Collective, Little Joy, CLUES, White Rabbits, Santigold, Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent, Sunset Rubdown, Jenny Lewis, and more) but our friends Gvsb are throwing down a sweet concert in Dallas well worth a road trip. On the bill: White Denim, PVC Street Gang, Harlem, and Fight Bite. It's happening on Saturday, June 13th at Harry's Pastime Tavern (map).

To be honest, White Denim took a while to win us over. Having seen them several times, we just weren't sold. That all changed with their performance at The Parish last month. We're definitely fans. Better late than never right?

Then starting with a tour kickoff date at Emo's opening for Lions, they'll embark on a month long tour throughout June that includes a performance at the NXNE Festival in Toronto, ON.

Earlier tonight Grizzly Bear performed a special stripped down acoustic set in NPR's WNYC studio. In addition to performing new songs off their new album Veckatimest, which by the way will finally be released on Tuesday, David Garland also spent some time interviewing the band as well.

Foreign Born Announce 2009 North American Tour Dates :: w/ Austin date (Mohawk)

Starting tomorrow Foreign Born will be hitting the road performing all across North America with the likes of BLK JKS, Grizzly Bear, Warpaint, and most dates with The Veils.

Although we missed them during this year's SXSW (partially cause I wasn't too familiar with them), we'll definitely be at their show at the Mohawk on July 19th. Also joining Foreign Born and The Veils (who I am familiar with) will be Other Girls. Purchase tickets ($10) here. Doors are set to open around 9pm on that Sunday evening for the all ages show.

Thanks to our friend Joey for the recommendation. I haven't been able to stop listening to Foreign Born's (almost two year old), On The Wing Now the past few days. I can't believe it took me this long to get my first listen. I'm highly anticipating their new album Person To Person, and it seems we won't have to wait too long after all. It's due out next month on the 23rd via Secretly Canadian. We have a couple of songs from the new album for you to check out down below.

Note* The show was even earlier than expected so we only managed to catch Eulogies last song. This was extremely disappointing since I thought I was early in the first place. Every one needs to check them out though. [Eulogies]. By the way, KUT (90.5) here in Austin and KUT.org on the web will have Eulogies on the air at 2 PM today.

Also lead singer Murray Lightburn of The Dears starts the set off in the back of the room and serenades the crowd as he walks through the middle of the room until reaching the stage. I thought this was genius. People standing in front of him didn't even notice at first.

Sunset Announces 2009 U.S. Summer Tour Dates

sunsettour1

We were truly sad when Austin's Sound Team broke up, but taking their place was Sunset, a project founded by former bassist Bill Baird. Last year, they released an honest, beautiful record entitled, The Glowing City. Stream the entire thing at imeem or just go ahead and get yourself a copy for $9 via local label Autobus. Their newest project (released last month) is the 7" Loveshines II, which we alluded to last year.

Sunset is ready to hit the road this Summer and kicks it off with a show this Thursday at Baby Blue Studio (E. 12th between Comal and Chicon).
