Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears Extend 2009 Tour into June, Performing at ACL

Not content with leaving the road, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears have decided to extend their tour and are bringing their soulful tunes to city near you. In addition to finishing their tour tonight in Alabama with Robert Randolph, they are headed back to Texas to take part in the KTSW Mr. Fest in San Marcos. On May 6, they will be performing a FREE instore at Houston's Cactus Music (2110 Portsmouth) at 5:30PM and then a few a few days later on the 8th will be back in Austin at Emo's with Lucero (purchase those tickets here for $12). And then in June, they start a tour with the New York Dolls. Oh, did I mention they'll be playing at this year's Austin City Limits Festival too (not sure which day yet though)?

Currently this month read about Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears in Spin Magazine and Paste. Also be sure to check out their video for "Sugarfoot", which we happened to post last month. You can purchase their full-length album, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is! via Lost Highway Records.

stellastarr* Announce 2009 Summer U.S. Tour Dates :: w/ Austin date (The Parish)

I remember my first exposure to stellastarr* was with Richard back at Coachella 2004 in a tent back when it was still a two day festival. I recall him really like their debut album and mentioned wanting to check them out. It wasn't too crowded, so we headed right towards the front and I really ended up enjoying the set. Suffice to say, I bought the album after getting back home.

In 2005 they released Harmonies for the Haunted to lukewarm success. I actually enjoyed it, but still would choose their debut if given the choice. Now fast forward to the future, on July 7th stellastar* will be releasing their third album Civilized. You can listen to the band's first single, "Graffiti Eyes", as well as another song from the album entitled, "Warchild", on their Myspace.

This Summer the band will also hit the road for a short U.S. tour, their first in over 3 years. They'll be stopping by here in Austin to perform at The Parish on July 27, those tickets are only $12. Tickets for all the dates go on sale tomorrow at 11AM (CST), except the Boston show (listen to WFNX for tickets announcements for that one).

New Music from The xx & Video for "Crystalised"

We've been digging The xx (pronounced "ex ex") since stumbling upon their video "Crystalised" on The Fader earlier (they also have an interview with the band too). Although the video is pretty lackluster, as it just features the band leaning against a wall playing their instruments with projections going across their faces and behind them, the song on the other hand is very entrancing. The music is simple, yet works with the guy and girl vocals just right.

The band are four 19 year olds (Baria, Jamie, Oliver, and Romy) from South West London. They list their influences (according to their Myspace) as Aaliyah to CocoRosie, Rihanna to The Cure, Missy Elliott to Chromatics, The Kills to Ginuwine, Pixies to Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake to Tracy + the plastics. Their first single "Crystalised" was just released a few days back on Young Turks and the b-side includes a cover of Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire" (purchase it here). The foursome are currently working on a full-length due out in September.

This Friday :: The Great Nostalgic Album Release Party w/ {{{Sunset}}}, The Sour Notes at Hole in the Wall

releasepartyposter

This Friday sure is a busy night (w/ Death Cab for Cutie, Monarchs, Paul Green School of Rock, The Tunnels all playing shows) and although we mentioned this show on our weekly recommendations on Monday, we thought it deserved a post of it's own.

Relatively new Austin band, The Great Nostalgic is performing this Friday at Hole in the Wall with {{{Sunset}}} and The Sour Notes to celebrate the release of their self-titled debut (read glowing reviews from Austin Town Hall and Two Groove). Bonus discs, which include remixes from Many Birthdays and Businessman DJs, in addition to a music video for "Queen and Country" will be given out as well with the purchase of the new album ($8). The show starts at 10PM and will feature guest musicians from Pink Nasty and Hard Proof Afrobeat's horn section.

2009 Austin City Limits Line Up

Austin City Limits Festival - Sunsetting by lannadelarosa.Austin City Limits Festival - SBC Stage by lannadelarosa.

Wow! ACL really delivered this year. The only thing missing was the Yeah Yeah Yeah's but I can move on from that. It's also nice to see that they have swayed from not having DJ style acts on the bill with inclusions of both Girl Talk and Bassnectar. That should really change the flow of the festival. The big names are there but so are some up and comers. Nice to see Passion Pit, School of Seven Bells, The Henry Clay People, Here We Go Magic and The Virgins on the bill. Dan Auerbach will be here to give me redemption after missing the SXSW showcase. Jack White's new band The Dead Weather!!! I am also excited to see two of my favorite Brits Lily Allen and Arctic Monkeys! I could go on and on..... Going to be a great festival!

Tonight: The Kills, The Horrors and The Magic Wands at Emo's

Allison Mosshart of The Kills was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday night in Denver. Apparently a combination of the altitude and a bad cold caused her to have shortness of breath and she was forced to leave the show. She was released from the hospital and plans to go on with the tour. Which leads us up to tonight where they make their return to Austin.

Hopefully she has had some time to recoup and the warm Texas weather will do her some good. The band is joined by The Horrors who recently ditched the style that was bringing the dreaded UK "Next Big Thing" hype and recorded a fantastic new album (mostly in the dark). I listened to Primary Colours last night in it's entirety and it is a phenomenal album. It will be in stores May 5th.

And get there early because Nashville duo the Magic Wands will be opening. They recently released their debut EP Magic, Love & Dreams with what has been called "wall of white guitars" and "unapologetic cosmic pop". We don't know what that means but it sounds good. Give the the lead single "Black Magic" a listen. [The Magic Wands - Black Magic]

Little Joy Returns To Austin (The Independent), Dallas (Club Dada) in June

Little Joy / Austin 11/29/08

Yeah, you read the title of this post right! Little Joy will be returning to Texas to play some shows in Austin and Dallas, not sure if there's more cities or if the lineup will include Fabrizio Moretti (we thought he was recording new material with his other band, The Strokes). We do however know that we'll be there, seriously they were incredible last year at The Parish.

First up, they'll be performing here in Austin at The Independent (map) on June 8th. Tickets for the show are only $13, and go on sale this Saturday at 10AM. You better snatch those tickets up quickly unless you want to pay a bunch of money on Craigslist. The next night, they'll be in Dallas at Club Dada, purchase those tickets ($11) here.

Little Joy's self-titled debut was one of our favorite records last year, purchase it here.

Update: Looks like they're also playing the Troubadour in West Hollywood on June 5th. Tickets for that show are already on sale, purchase them here for $15.

First Summer Sweat Going On This Saturday

Summer_sweat_1

Seriously it's been crazy hot lately! To combat the heat Knuckle Rumbler , The Loyalty Firm, and Do512.com have teamed up for the first Summer Sweat. It's where we'll be this Saturday before we head to La Zona Rosa to check out the SOLD OUT Franz Ferdinand show. It's going down from 6 - 10PM at The Do512.com Compound (2208 S. Lamar) and it's completely FREE! In addition to complimentary drinks from Sweet Leaf Tea, Lone Star, and Tito's, there will be a bunch of live music, including performances by The Boxing Lesson, The Steps, ZEALE, and DJ Orion on the decks.
