Mike Relm, Vetiver, The Morning Benders headline six hour unofficial day party during South by Southwest, featuring 13 of the San Francisco Bay Area’s hottest indie bands
Tricycle Records and The Bay Bridged are proud to announce the second annual Bay Area Takeover, a six hour unofficial day party during the 2009 South by Southwest Music Festival. Taking place on Thursday, March 19th, 2009 from 12pm to 6pm at Austin’s Beauty Bar (click here for directions), with performances by over a dozen of the San Francisco Bay Area’s hottest artists representing a broad cross-section of the Bay’s fertile and diverse music scene.
The show’s headliners–Sub Pop folk-rock masters Vetiver, acclaimed A/V DJ Mike Relm, and indie pop buzz band The Morning Benders–are leaders in forging the Bay Area’s cosmopolitan music identity.
We're definitely fans of Wallpaper, he was one of our "SXSW Spotlights" we featured last year. He's one not to be missed!

Metric (finally) announces new album :: Fantasies

METRIC made a point of taking their time with the writing process on the new album and many of the songs were road tested between recording sessions. Says guitarist Jimmy Shaw, "We allowed this record to dictate its own process. Whatever that process was going to be, it was going to be, we were relaxed about it. The whole time I could hear the sound I wanted in my head -really big and really dreamy." Produced by Gavin Brown and Jimmy Shaw and mixed by Grammy nominated, long time friend and collaborator John O'Mahony (Coldplay, The Strokes), the album's gilded surfaces and textural density - a mix of psychedelia, disco, electronica, punk-rock and bubblegum pop - manifest Shaw's "dream state" vision.
The band is excited about exploring new ways of getting music out to their fans around the world and hope to be part of a new spirit of innovation in the music industry in that regard. "When we got out of our record deal we took meetings with all the usual suspects, the major labels and the big indies" explains METRIC frontwoman Emily Haines. "It was strange having some real choices for the first time in our career while also feeling like whichever deal we chose was going to end up being restrictive and force us to compromise creatively. At one point, we just said 'oh fuck it, lets gamble', took a deep breath and decided to put this record out worldwide our own way."
Fantasies Track listing:
1. Help I'm Alive
2. Sick Muse
3. Satellite Mind
4. Twilight Galaxy
5. Gold Guns Girls
6. Gimme Sympathy
7. Collect Call
8. Front Row
9. Blindness
10. Stadium Love

February Instores at Waterloo Records

"I grew up bass-fishing, playing in creeks, and shooting BB guns," Kweller says. "Country music was the soundtrack to my life. It's still a big part of who I am. When Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson come on the radio, somethin' happens inside. Brings me back to the trees, back to pushin' cars out of the mud. Reminds me of my hometown."On releasing a country album:
"I've been working on Horses for years." he says. "I wrote the first song for it when I was 16. Over time, I've collected these songs that fit together and wanted to release them together. I didn't want to try and fit them on my other albums one or two at a time."On producing the record himself:
"I've learned so much from all the great producers I've worked with, from Ethan Johns to Gil Norton, and I just felt it was time for me to go in there and make the album the way I knew I could," he says. "I wanted it to feel really pure and direct. I wanted each instrument to sound exactly like that instrument, with very little treatment or alteration, to give it that natural, warm beauty that I love." [Via Paste]

“The new songs are very personal,”says Keely. “Some of them are autobiographical. We’re building on everything we’ve ever done, looking back on our whole career and taking a lot inspiration from our early music. We continue to evolve the concept and try to incorporate new ideas. And there was no point on the record where we were trying to write songs you’d hear on commercial radio. We know that singles are driving the market, and we don’t care.” [Via Altsounds]

Sydney Festival 2009 (Feat. Videos of St. Vincent)
St Vincent: Marry Me (Via Shoot The Player)
St Vincent: What Me Worry? (Via Shoot The Player)

Sydney Festival was originally conceived by the Sydney Committee, the NSW State Government and the City of Sydney with a view to attracting people into the city centre during the holiday month of January. The first Festival took place in 1977 and it has since grown to become one of Australia's largest annual cultural celebrations with an international reputation for modern, popular and intelligent programming. In many ways it is probably still best understood as a celebration of Sydney and its style and energy reflect the confidence, diversity and vigour of one of the world's most beautiful cities. For three weeks each January the Festival offers a rich program of around 80 events involving upwards of 500 artists from Australia and abroad covering dance, theatre, music, visual arts, cross media and forums. In any given year, it makes use of most of the main theatres across the city including Sydney Theatre, CarriageWorks, City Recital Hall and venues at the Sydney Opera House.Sydney Festival also presents a number of quality, free outdoor events such as the long-running Festival in the Domain with Jazz and Symphony concerts, each attracting up to 100,000 people. In 2008 the Festival introduced a new opening event, Festival First Night, for which people are invited to take to the streets to enjoy a large-scale celebration of music and performance. In its inaugural year, Festival First Night attracted 200,000 people into the heart of the city. The Sydney Festival usually attracts a total audience of approximately 1 million people across all of its events each year, making it the most attended cultural event in Australia.
